Types of SMAT Ball Mill

SMAT offers three main types of ball mill based on discharging method, each suited for different processing requirements:

Wet Grid Ball Mill

Discharges through a grid plate at the discharge end. Suitable for coarse grinding (first stage grinding in a two-stage circuit). Prevents over-grinding and maintains higher throughput. The most commonly used type in Philippine mineral processing plants.

Dry Grid Ball Mill

Operates without water. Used in cement production, ceramic powder preparation, and dry mineral processing where water is scarce or the downstream process requires dry feed. Grid plate ensures uniform discharge particle size.

Dry Grid Ball Mill

Discharges through overflow when the slurry level rises above the discharge trunnion. Suitable for fine grinding (second stage grinding) and regrinding of rougher concentrates. Produces finer product compared to grid type. Widely used in gold and copper flotation circuits.

Structure & Configuration

SMAT ball mills are built with high-quality components and can be configured according to your specific requirements:

Main bearing, adopting slide bearing, rolling bearing or sliding-shoe bearing as per requirement.

Liner, adopting wear-resistant metal liner, rubber liner, magnetic liner and alumina liner (high aluminum lining brick).

Following items as per options: inching driving device, high and low pressure lubrication station, spraying lubrication device of gear, jacking device and PLC control system.

Applications in the Philippines

The Philippines is one of the most mineral-rich countries in Southeast Asia, with significant deposits of gold, copper, nickel, chromite, and iron ore. SMAT ball mills are widely used in Philippine mining operations, supporting both large-scale mines and small to medium-scale processing plants.

Gold Ore Processing

In gold processing plants, the ball mill is used to grind ore to -200 mesh (75μm) or finer, liberating gold particles for cyanidation (CIL/CIP) or gravity separation. A typical gold CIL plant uses a wet grid ball mill as the primary grinding stage, paired with a hydrocyclone to form a closed-circuit grinding system. Overflow ball mills are often used for regrinding of flotation concentrates.

Copper Ore Processing

For copper sulfide ore, the ball mill grinds the ore to the required fineness before flotation. The grinding fineness directly affects the recovery rate of copper. SMAT ball mills, combined with spiral classifiers or hydrocyclones, provide stable and controllable grinding performance for copper flotation circuits.

Nickel Laterite Processing

The Philippines is one of the world's top nickel producers. For nickel laterite ore, ball mills are used in the grinding stage of the HPAL (High Pressure Acid Leach) process or in preparing ore for rotary kiln smelting.
